Let’s be honest - most small business owners don’t have hours to spend buried in analytics or rewriting their entire strategy. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore your marketing altogether. A quick check-in can go a long way. This simple 30-minute audit will help you see what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus your energy next.
First things first: What’s the point?
You’re not trying to create a full-blown marketing strategy right now. The goal is to get clarity. This audit will help you answer three essential questions:
Am I reaching the right people?
Are my channels working together?
Is my marketing moving the business forward?
Let’s get to it.
Step 1: Check your visibility (10 minutes)
Open up your browser and go incognito. Search for your business name, your main product or service, and any keywords you think you “should” be ranking for.
Ask yourself:
What shows up first - your website, a directory, someone else?
Do your listings (Google, Facebook, etc.) look up to date?
Would you click through?
Pro tip: If your Google Business Profile isn’t claimed or feels outdated, fix that now - it’s often the first impression for local businesses. |
Step 2: Look at your data (10 minutes)
Open your analytics tool of choice (GA4, Meta, Wix, whatever you’re using) and take a look at:
Where your traffic is coming from (organic, social, ads, referrals?)
Which pages or posts are actually getting views?
What’s your top-performing call-to-action?
You don’t need to deep dive - just look for patterns. Are you investing a lot of time on Instagram but most leads come from Google? That’s a red flag.
Step 3: Review your message (10 minutes)
Go to your homepage, your Instagram bio, and your last three social media posts.
Now imagine landing on those as someone who doesn’t know you.
Is it clear what you offer?
Can people tell who it’s for?
Is there a next step?
Tip: If your call-to-action is missing, hidden, or vague (“click here” doesn’t count), fix it. Make it easy for people to take action. |
Final step: Decide what’s next
Pick one area to improve — not five.
For example:
Fix the homepage headline to make it clearer
Shift effort from a platform that’s not converting
Create a new lead magnet to replace that outdated freebie
The point of this audit isn’t perfection. It’s progress.
